The Social Housing Branch is responsible for all social housing assistance programs. Those programs are:
Non profit housing programs:
Public non-profit
Regular section: This program provide low-income households with low-rental housing units in social housing projects owned and operated by public agencies. Households whose income is less than a specified ceiling are eligible.
Some 650 municipal housing authorities or, in some cases, the Societe de gestion immobilere(SGI-SHQ), manage low-rental housing projects at the local level.
Inuit section: The purpose of this program is to provide public rental housing in Inuit communities north of the 55th parallel.
Regular section (cooperatives and non-profit organisation): This program enables housing cooperatives (coops) and non-profit organisations (NPOs) to produce and operate low-rental housing. Coops and NPOs make these units available to low-income families, senior citizens or handicapped persons. The program also enables these organisations to produce and operate housing for specefic groups, generally persons with physical, mental or social problems. These are called special housing projects.
Section for Natives living off-reserve: This program provide support for non-profit native corporations to operate low-rental housing for low-income Native households living off-reserve.
Tenants pay rent which is determined in accordance with the Bylaw respecting condition for leasing low-rental housing units. According to this bylaw, the base rent for a social housing unit is 25% of household income. Tenants must also pay a flat amount for electricity (about $25 a month) and parking if any.
